MCC golfers hold first-round lead at Heritage Hills

McCook Community College Golf MCC freshman Ethan Gough leads all golfers with a three-under par 69 after the opening round of the MCC Invite.

The McCook Community College has a one-shot lead over Eastern Wyoming after the first day of the MCC Invite at Heritage Hills Golf Course. MCC shot a ten-over 298, and three golfers are in the top six including freshman Ethan Gough (Hillcrest, South Africa) who has the first-round lead.

“It was good day for MCC at Heritage Hills on a warm and humid day,” said MCC Coach Tyler Loop, who knows the slim lead over Eastern Wyoming will inspire some determination tomorrow by the Lancers.

“I'm guessing we'll need a score just as good, if not better to come out on top,” Loop said.

Northeastern Junior College is in third place 11 shots back of MCC, Central Wyoming is in fourth, 39 shots back, Lamar is in fifth place and Otero Junior College sixth.

Eastern Wyoming and McCook both have three golfers in the top six in the individual standings.

Gough holds a three-shot lead over Tim Van Stiphout of EWC. MCC freshman Jordan Bingham (South Jordan, Utah) is in third place with a one-over 73, he is competing as an individual and his score didn’t count in the team scoring. MCC Freshman Payton Craw (McCook) is in a fourth-place tie with five other golfers who posted a two-over 74 on Thursday.

Freshman Braden Dahl (Hillcrest, South Africa) is in ninth place with a three-over 75. Sophomore Adam Durban is tied for 10th place with a first-round 77.

Cayden Wynne (freshman, Lincoln Southwest) shot an 80 while freshmen Spencer Wishon (Oberlin) and Nathan Sughroue (Hastings Adams-Central) both shot 88s on the day.

“This is a solid and smart team and they are hungry to win so I expect tomorrow to be very competitive.” Loop said.

The second round begins at 10 a.m. Friday.
