No. 5 Indian Hills men roll past MCC in tourney opener
OTTUMWA, Iowa – The McCook Community College men ran into a buzzsaw Friday dropping a 94-57 decision to No. 5 Indian Hills Community College in the opening game of the Bowling RV Classic,
Julian Lual (Calgary, Alberta) hit a jumper with 6:00 remaining in the first half to close MCC to within three points at 21-18 but the Warriors went on a 19-3 run to close out the quarter to lead 40-24.
“I thought we played 12 minutes of really good basketball in the first half then didn’t handle their run and then sunk,” said MCC Coach Jacob Brandl. “Against a team like that you can’t do it. That team is built to win a national championship and they played like it tonight.”
Taj Anderson led Indian Hills with 22 points. The Warriors shot 47.1 percent from the field, made 13 of 32 3-pointers (40.6 percent) and made 17 of 20 free throws (85 percent).
The Warriors out-rebounded MCC 54-33, out-scored MCC in the paint 38-16, and the Indian Hills bench out-scored MCC 62-24.
“That’s the most disappointing part about tonight was just our lack of fight,” Brandl said.
Lual led MCC with 13 points, Beni Fungula (Stockholm, Sweden) added 11 points and led MCC with seven rebounds.
“Tonight was a tough one, we just got out classed,” Brandl said.
MCC falls to 1-7, Indian Hills improves to 5-1.
“The good news is we have a short turnaround and a chance to be better tomorrow,” Brandl said.
MCC will take on North Central Missouri College Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
