MCC Basketball Womens

The McCook Community College women topped Trinidad State Saturday at home 75-57 to improve to 3-0 to start Region IX South play.

The Lady Indians built a 20-10 lead five minutes into the game, but Trinidad responded with a 9-0 run before MCC hit a 3-pointer in the final 15 seconds of the half to take a 23-19 lead. MCC outscored the Lady Trojans 21-8 in the second period to take a 44-27 halftime lead.

MCC “It was a kind of a slow ‘up-and-down’ first quarter but we locked in in that second quarter and extended the lead but we played four quarters of basketball like we were supposed to this weekend,” said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett.

Trinidad State closed the gap in the third quarter to 56-44 before MCC seized control of the game in the fourth quarter closing out with a 19-13 final quarter edge.

“For the most part we guarded well – we gave up a few shots I think we could do better at – but overall we played good defense all weekend,” said Pritchett.

Sophomore Laia Izquierdo Altimira (Barcelona, Spain) led MCC with 21 points, five rebounds, four steals and she went seven-for-seven from the free-throw line.

“We had different players step up, Laia played really well for us today – got to the foul line better and got to the rim,” said Pritchett.

Sophomore Johanna Gerlach (Hachborn, Germany) scored nine points, sophomore Jacelyn Jorgensen (Paxton) had eight points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal, and Peyton Cox (sophomore, Wauneta) chipped in eight points and three rebounds.

Freshmen Marissa Evans (Barrow, United Kingdom) and Miah Wren (Rangely, Colo.) scored six and five points respectively off the bench.

“It was a good game for everybody to come in and we had 12 players get in the scorebook today,” said Pritchett. “It was good to see Miah come in and make some shots.”

Sophomore Carolina Garcia Perdomo (Islas Canarias, Spain) led the Lady Indians with eight rebounds and five assists. Freshman Claudia Serrador Cortazar (Trapagaran, Spain) scored four points with five rebounds and freshman Stephanie Nnabuihe (freshman, Newbridge, Ireland) grabbed six boards with two points.

Shooting statistics were not available but MCC went eight-for-eight from the free-throw line in the first half and made 17 of 25 free throws in the game (68 percent).

“Our goal tonight was to attack the paint, get to the free-throw line and finish better and I thought we did those things,” said Pritchett.

The Lady Indians held a 42-32 edge on the boards.

Trinidad State falls to 2-13 and 0-2 in region play.

MCC improves to 10-9 and 3-0 in the Region IX South standings.

The Lady Indians hit the road for the first time in region play this week starting with a Wednesday game in Lamar (6 p.m.) followed by a Saturday date with Southeast Community College in Lincoln. That game is set for a 2 p.m. tipoff.

“We have a big week ahead of us,” said Pritchett. “I don’t think we’ve hit our peak and I think we have a lot of growth left but we’re in a good position to start the region.”

MCC will be home Jan. 28 against Western Nebraska starting at 5:30 p.m.
