Lady Indians fall in overtime to Lamar, 52-45
For the second time this season, Lamar Community College took down McCook Community College. The Runnin’ Lopes won 52-45 Wednesday night in overtime at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.
“We played really hard, we just didn’t make shots tonight,” said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett. “It’s unfortunate how things turned out but I can’t fault our players for the kind of fight they had tonight in a tough, physical game.”
MCC had a 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, Lamar led at halftime, 23-22. Both teams scored just seven points in the third quarter and the teams were tied at 42 at the end of regulation. The Runnin’ Lopes outscored MCC 10-3 in the extra five minutes.
Lamar outscored MCC 21-9 at the free-throw line. The Lady Indians had 23 fouls and Lamar had 14.
“We got in foul trouble all game,” said Pritchett.
The Lady Indians shot just 18.8 percent from the field in the second half and 23.6 percent for the game. MCC made just two of 19 shots from distance (10.5 percent), and was nine of 16 from the free-throw line (56.3 percent). The Tribe outrebounded Lamar 53-48, with 16 coming in the offensive zone.
Sophomore Johanna Gerlach (Hachborn, Germany) was the only MCC player in double-figures. She scored 10 points with seven rebounds. Laia Izquierdo Altimira (sophomore, Barcelona, Spain) scored nine points. Sophomore Carolina Garcia Perdomo (Islas Canarias, Spain) scored seven points with four assists.
Freshman Stephanie Nnabuihe (freshman, Newbridge, Ireland) led MCC on the boards with eight along with five points. Claudia Serrador Cortazar (freshman, Trapagaran, Spain) had four blocked shots for MCC and freshman Nevaeh Lucero (freshman (Thornton, Colo.) scored six points with a team-high three steals.
Lamar shot 24.1 percent for the game, made five of 18 triples (27.8 percent) and made 21 of 30 free-throw attempts (70 percent).
Lamar is the only team to beat MCC in region play. They beat the Lady Indians 49-45 in Lamar on Jan. 21.
The Runnin’ Lopes improve to 5-2 in Region IX South play and 13-6 overall.
The Lady Indians fall to 6-2 in region and 13-11 overall.
MCC will be home again Saturday for a region game against Southeast Community College (1-5, 3-17) with tipoff against the Bobcats set for 2 p.m.
“We have to focus on Southeast Saturday here, and we need to take care of a lot of little details and execute better,” said Pritchett.
