Lady Indians score 48 runs in home-opening sweep

The McCook Community College softball team celebrated their home-opener at the Jaycees Sports Complex Wednesday by scoring 48 runs in a doubleheader sweep over Dakota College at Bottineau 20-0 and 28-4.
The Lady Indians scored 16 runs in the second inning in the Game 1 rout which featured 17 hits – three each by sophomore Anna Elliott (Calgary, Alberta), Peytann Weiland (Aurora, Colo.) and freshmen Kashlin Beck (Claflin, Kan.) who smacked her first home run of the year.
MCC topped their second-inning output in Game 2 scoring 17 second-inning runs in a game highlighted by 21 hits with three hit games from Elliott, Beck and sophomore Kaylee Smith (Calgary, Alberta), who had five RBIs. Beck smashed a second-inning grand slam and had six RBIs in the game.
“We got a lot of girls in today,” said MCC Coach Mike Mendenhall. “We weren’t trying to run the score up but our girls were tough outs.”
Dakota College at Bottineau goes to 1-11 on the season.
MCC improves to 16-4.
The weather has changed the upcoming schedule with Friday’s originally scheduled games at Sterling, Colo. against Northeastern Junior College pushed back to Monday because of forecasts for strong winds in eastern Colo. MCC will begin their series with Northeastern Junior College Sunday hosting the Plainswomen at the Jaycees Sports Complex in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
“Now it’s on to region games and we have some big ones coming up Sunday and Monday against NJC.”
The Plainswomen are 5-19, these will be the first Region IX games for both teams.

GAME 1 – McCook 20, Dakota College 0: Up 1-0 in the second, the Lady Indians sent 21 batters to the plate and extended the lead to 17-0. Anna Elliott and Peytann Weiland both had a double and two singles in the inning, Laila Gutierrez (Seminole, Texas) had a double and freshman Payton Kinsley (Didsbury, Alberta) tripled. MCC had 11 hits, four walks, two sacrifice flies in the inning.
Kashlin Beck (Claflin, Kan.) hit a leadoff home run and MCC added another run in the third inning to go up 19-0 and Beck tripled in the fourth and scored on an RBI groundout from sophomore Kendree Kern (LaSalle, Colo.) for the final run.
Sophomore Lexi Knapp (Berthoud, Colo.) pitched the first two innings, allowing one hit and three strikeouts. Freshman Olivia Pollon (Tisdale, Saskatchewan) pitched the final three innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.
Beck had nine total bases with her homer, triple and double and scored four runs. Weiland drove in three with her three hits and Elliott also had a three-hit game. Gutierrez had three RBIs with her two hits.
GAME 2 – McCook 28, Dakota College 4: After scoring six runs in the first inning, MCC sent 21 hitters to the plate in the second which included 10 hits, five walks, a hit batter and one error. Key hits came from freshman Paige Warren (Victoria, British Columbia) who hit a bases-loaded triple to make the score 13-3, and the grand slam by Beck and an RBI-single by Olivia Pollon to finish out the inning with a 23-2 lead.
The Lady Indians added three runs in the third and two in the fourth.
Freshman Olivia Moorhead (Hershey) pitched a complete-game for MCC allowing three earned runs on seven hits, no walks ant four strikeouts.
Beck led the offense with three hits and six RBIs, Smith was three-for-three with three runs scored and five RBIs, Elliott was three-for-three with three RBIs and three runs scored. Pollon and freshman Kaliyah St. Amand (Duncan, British Columbia) both had two hits and two RBIs.
