Lady Indians sweep Lopes at home


The McCook Community College volleyball team won their 15th match of the season Thursday with a 3-0 sweep over Lamar Community College in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. MCC won 25-16, 25-9 and 25-15 to send the Runnin’ Lopes to their fifth straight loss.

“We came out and minimized our errors especially when it came to hitting and that was something we wanted to focus on,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

The two teams were tied at 11 in the first set before MCC took control of the match and closed out the set on a 14-5 run.

Sophomore Caylin Barnett (McCook) let the attack with 10 kills and added a block four service aces and eight digs. Freshman Charlee Russick (Berthoud, Colo.) had eight kills, a block and seven digs and sophomore Romina Martinez Castro (Cochabamba, Bolivia) chipped in seven kills a block and six digs.

Freshman Ella Verts (Marshall, Mo.) had led the middle with three blocks and had two kills. Sophomore Rowan Tribelhorn (Yuma, Colo.) had two kills and a block.

Sophomore Cibeles Bothwell (Spring, Texas) led MCC with 20 digs and added an ace. Sophomore Emerie Rios (Sterling, Colo.) had an ace and one dig.

Freshman Abby Thompson (Bison, S.D.) led the Lady Indians in the passing game with 16 assists to go along with four digs while freshman Megan Walker (Haxtun, Colo.) had 10 assists, a dig, a kill and a block.

“Now we just have to carry forward with it, the girls get a little break here midway through the season and hopefully they go out, come back and they’re hungry and ready,” said Kobza.

Lamar goes to 5-11 and goes to 0-1 in the region

MCC improves to 15-5 and 1-0 in the Region IX South.

“This a great start to the region but we have to come back and be ready because next week is going to be a tough week,” said Kobza.

The Lady Indians will be on the road for the next two weeks. On Wednesday MCC travels to Sterling, Colo. to take on No. 4 Northeastern Junior College (15-4). On Oct 5. MCC goes to Scottsbluff to play Western Nebraska then takes on Central Community College Oct. 8 in Columbus.

The next home matches for MCC will be Oct. 11 when the Lady Indians take on Otero Junior College for a 6 p.m. homecoming match. MCC is now 10-1 this season on the home court.
