Lady Indians sweep Southeast CC on Sophomore Night
The McCook Community College volleyball team swept past Southeast Community College Friday night in three sets at home. MCC won 25-16, 25-19, 25-14 with an important match Saturday at home against North Platte.
“Tonight, we did well. A few times we had a few silly mistakes and that was us not playing to the level we’re capable of, but we were able to overcome those,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.
Three sophomore players and two staff were honored prior to the match. They included outside hitters Charlee Russick (Berthoud, Colo.), Audrey Holm (Paxton, Colo.) and Paulina Fister (Tuszyn, Poland). Student Assistant Coach Jackson Dellevoet and Student Manager Jaedin Johns were also honored.
“Huge shout out to our sophomores,” said Kobza. “They’ve come in, worked hard, are great leaders and at the end of the day they are all really great people and I’m glad to be able to coach and work with them.
Russick led the MCC attack with 15 kills (with a .568 hitting percentage) to go along with seven digs two blocks and a service ace. Fister, who suited up in the libero jersey had 11 digs to lead MCC. Holm had five kills and three digs.
“Tonight we were able to get a few different players in a few different lineup options just to see some things for the end of the year,” said Kobza. “I do think we have a strong group of players and it shows up when we play together as a team.”
Freshman Landree McNair (Chase County High School) had six kills, 10 assists, two digs and one block. Bobbi Starkebaum (freshman, Haxtun, Colo.) had three kills, one solo block and two block assists. Freshman Leia Young (Amarillo, Texas) was credited with three kills six digs, one solo block and two block assists with one service ace.
Zoe Mulholland (freshman, Lander, Wyo.) led MCC with 13 assists with five digs. Freshman Libby Cole (Perkins County HS) had six assists and two digs.
Freshman Anna Richardson (freshman, Worland, Wyo.) had one kill, one block assist and one dig. Peightan Swanson (freshman, Severance, Colo.) had one kill
Brooke Nelson (freshman, Berthoud, Colo.) led MCC with two service aces to go along with 10 digs.
Southeast falls to 1-11 in the region and 6-34 overall.
MCC goes to 7-5 and 11-15 overall.
Friday’s MCC win, coupled with a loss by Trinidad state at second place Western Nebraska moves MCC from fifth in the standings to third place. Northeastern Junior College clinched the regular season title with a 3-0 win over Otero Friday.
The Lady Indians host North Platte at 2 p.m. Saturday for what shapes up as a pivotal game in the Region IX south standings.
Both teams are tied for third place with records of 7-5 with one region game remaining for each team after Saturday’s match. The winner of Saturday’s rivalry game between the Knights and the Lady Indians will control their own path to a third place finish with an eighth win in region play. MCC currently holds the tie-breaker by sweeping the Knights Oct. 1 in North Platte, 26-24, 25-19 and 25-19.
After Saturday’s match both teams will have one match left, North Platte will host seventh place Southeast Wednesday while MCC will wrap up the Region IX schedule Thursday at sixth place Lamar.
Only the top four teams in the standings will advance to the Region IX tournament which starts Nov. 5.
