Lady Indians take down Hastings JVs 79-56

The McCook Community College women downed the Hastings College JVs Thursday at home 79-56.

“This was a game that going in we talked about just getting better every possession, every play and get better for next weekend,” said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett.

MCC raced to a 26-13 first-quarter lead and led 47-32 at intermission, but only outscored the Bronco JVs by two points in the second period, three points in the third and five in the fourth.

“We didn’t shoot it great. I thought we settled for outside shots when we could have executed and gone for one more pass or drove the lane,” said Pritchett. “But we missed a lot of inside shots.”

MCC shot 46.3 percent in the first half but cooled off to 38.2 in the second half and finished the game at 42.7 percent. From the 3-point line, the Lady Indians made just five of 17 attempts (29.4 percent). The team did make 10 of 13 free throws (76.9 percent.) and committed just eight turnovers.

Hastings shot 29 percent from the field, made eight of 30 3-point tries ( 26.7 percent) and shot 12-for-18 from the free throw line. The Broncos outrebounded MCC 47-41 but turned the ball over 22 times.

“We did get quality minutes from everybody and it’s always good to get the win on the last home game of the semester,” said Pritchett.

Nine of the 10 players who suited up for MCC scored at least a point, led by 29 from sophomore Gemma Gruettner Bacoul (Berlin, Germany). Sophomore transfer Suzan Sisman (Aarhus, Denmark) was the only Lady Indian to make more than one 3-pointers going three-for-seven with 15 points.

Madara Liepniece (freshman, Riga, Latvia) scored nine points, sophomore Noa Iglesias Chorda (Barcelona, Spain) added eight points and freshman Carlota Aliaga Alonso (Valencia, Spain) chipped in seven. Rebecca Dunn (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led MCC with eight rebounds to go along with four points.

“We have a lot to prepare for the last three games as we head to New Mexico,”

MCC goes to 7-4 and will end the semester on the road next weekend at Hobbs, N.M. The Lady Indians will play the hosts New Mexico JC Dec. 15, South Plains College Dec. 16 and Casper College Dec. 17.
