Lady Indians take two games from Runnin’ Lopes

The McCook Community College softball team swept a pair of games over Lamar Community College Saturday winning 9-1 and 12-1.
“We played pretty well all-around today despite it being a warm day,” said MCC Coach Mike Mendenhall. “Pitchers kept the ball in the zone and we played good defense of on the day.”
Sadie Kahl (sophomore, Calgary, Alberta) struck out seven hitters in Game 1 and MCC got solo home runs from sophomore Payton Kinsley (Didsbury, Alberta), freshman Kaliyah St. Amand (Duncan, British Columbia) and sophomore Laila Gutierrez (Seminole, Texas).
In Game 2 St. Amand picked up the complete-game win in five innings, allowing five hits and striking out eight as Gutierrez homered, drove in three and stole her league-leading 54th base of the season.
Lamar falls to 2-16 in Region IX and 5-27 overall.
MCC maintains first place in Region IX with a 12-2 record and 34-6 overall.
The two teams will play another doubleheader Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
The Lady Indians will be home for two games Wednesday starting at 2 p.m. against Hastings JV.

GAME 1 – McCook 9, Lamar 1: Payton Kinsley hit a two-run home run in the first to put MCC up 2-0. It was her 14th home run of the season which leads Region IX. Kaliyah St. Amand homered to lead off the second and Laila Gutierrez hit a solo homer to lead off the third as MCC took a 4-1 lead.
MCC added four runs in the fifth with Gutierrez reaching on a Lamar error, stealing second and scoring on an RBI-single by sophomore Lexi Knapp (Berthoud, Colo.). Starting pitcher Sadie Kahl helped her own cause with a single and sophomore Anna Elliott (Calgary, Alberta) singled in a run to make it 6-1. St. Amand singled in Kahl and Elliot scored on an RBI-groundout from Angela Banzet (sophomore, Surrey, British Columbia) to give MCC an 8-1 lead.
Gutierrez led off the sixth with a bunt single, stole second and scored on an RBI-single by Kinsley to extend the lead to 9-1.
Kahl closed the game out on the mound in the sixth inning, striking out the final two batters. She allowed one earned run on five hits, no walks and seven strikeouts.
Gutierrez, Kinsley and St. Amand all had two-hit games with homers, Elliott also had a two-hit game.
GAME 2 – McCook 12, Lamar 1: Sophomore Paige Warren (Victoria, British Columbia) led the game off with a double and scored on Payton Kinsley’s single.
The Lady Indians left two runners on base in the first and second innings but scored six runs with two outs in the third inning. Peytann Weiland (freshman, Aurora, Colo.) doubled in the first two runs in the inning. Sophomore Ayana Goodwin (Broomfield, Colo.) doubled home Weiland and Warren tripled in two, and came home on a Laila Gutierrez single to put MCC up 7-0.
Anna Elliott singled in a run in the fourth to make it an 8-0 game. Guiterrez smacked a two-run home run in the fifth and Lexi Knapp and Elliott delivered RBI-singles to make it a 12-0 MCC lead.
MCC had 19 hits in the five-inning game led by three each from Elliott and Knapp. Elliott had two RBIs in the game to take over the Region IX lead from Kinsley, who had two hits and an RBI. Elliott has 53 RBIs on the season and Kinsley 52.
Kaliyah St. Amand allowed a run in the fifth but picked up the complete-game win, allowing five hits, no walks and eight strikeouts.
