TORRINGTON, Wyo. – The McCook Community College women’s basketball team topped Eastern Wyoming Friday 63-50 to complete a season sweep over the Lancers.

“I thought we came out and play well start to finish,” said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett. “We took an early lead and never let it go, which I am really proud of them for that.”

MCC took a 15-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. Sophomore Carolina Garcia Perdomo (Islas Canarias, Spain) hit a pair of 3-pointers midway through the second period to put the Lady Indians up 26-18 and MCC took a 30-22 lead at intermission.

Sophomore Miriam Wahlqvist (Helsingborg, Sweden) took over in the lane midway in the third quarter and scored back-to-back baskets to put MCC up 43-30 as the Lady Indians held on for a 44-38 lead with one period left to play.

“I felt in the second half we made better adjustments tonight,” said Pritchett. “We talked about attacking the paint and at the rim and I felt we accomplished that.”

MCC went on a 12-0 scoring run in the fourth quarter and outscored Eastern Wyoming 19-12 in the final 10 minutes of the game.

Sophomore Laia Izquierdo Altimira (Barcelona, Spain) led the way offensively for MCC with 19 points. Freshman Mar Molina Munoz (Parets del Valles, Spain) scored 12 points and Wahlqvist finished with 10 points. Perdomo had seven points and led the team with six rebounds.

“We had some good contributions,” said Pritchett. “Laia and Mar shot the ball really well tonight.”

Altimara made eight of 14 shots from the field while Munoz went five-for-eight.

Freshman Claudia Serrador Cortazar (Trapagaran, Spain) scored six points and had five boards, while Johanna Gerlach (sophomore, Hachborn, Germany) had four points and five rebounds.

MCC shot 42.6 percent from the field, made five of 18 triples (27.8 percent) and made just 12 of 23 free throws (52.2 percent).

“We have to figure out how to make free throws as the season progresses,” said Pritchett. “That will make or break us come region play.”

Eastern Wyoming shot 35.4 percent from the field, 13.3 percent from the 3-point line on 15 shots and went 14-for-22 from the free-throw line 63.6 percent).

The Lancers outrebounded MCC 35-24. MCC turned the ball over 14 times.

“We took care of the ball better than we have and must continue that,” said Pritchett.

Eastern Wyoming falls to 7-7.

With Friday’s win, the Lady Indians complete the season sweep over the Lancers after starting the season with a 49-44 win in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center Oct. 31.

The Lady Indians improve to 5-7. MCC moves on to Cheyenne Saturday to play Laramie County Community College. The Golden Eagles beat MCC 65-59 Nov. 1 in McCook. LCCC topped North Platte Friday 87-67 to improve to 6-6.
