Lady Indians win finale; clinch home playoff game

TRINIDAD, Colo. – The McCook Community College women’s basketball team picked up a 78-49 road win Saturday at Trinidad State. The win – coupled with North Platte’s 74-59 loss at Otero – clinched the No. 4 seed for MCC and gives the Lady Indians a first-round home game next weekend to open the Region IX tournament.

The Lady Indians had one of their better first quarters of the season coming out to a 26-7 first-period lead and 42-21 at halftime.

“We played a great first quarter. We defended and shot the ball well,” said MCC Coach Brandon Prichett. “We set a tone early in the game and didn't let up.”

The Lady Indians also had one of their better bench performances with 43 bench points.

MCC shot 47.4 percent from the field, made six of 14 shots from the 3-point line and made 18 of 22 free throws (81.8 percent). The Lady Indians claimed the battle on the boards 42-24 and had 28 points in the paint compared to 12 for the Lady Trojans. MCC also was credited with 19 assists.

“We played together and it showed with 19 assists, leading to a lot of open shots,” said Pritchett.

Trinidad State shot 29.5 percent from the field, made eight of 30 shots from long distance and went five for six from the free-throw line.

Sophomore Laia Izquierdo Altimira (Barcelona, Spain) scored 17 points, making six of 13 shots from the field and three of six 3-point shots. Freshman Claudia Serrador Cortazar (Trapagaran, Spain) came off the bench to score 17 points and paced MCC with nine rebounds.

“Claudia had a big game inside and made shots for us and was really efficient,” said Pritchett. “And Laia came back from a tough one last night and had a good shooting night.”

Sophomore Carolina Garcia Perdomo (Islas Canarias, Spain) scored 11 points and made five of seven shots. Freshman Stephanie Nnabuihe (Newbridge, Ireland) had six rebounds. Nevaeh Lucero (freshman (Thornton, Colo.) had eight bench points.

“Nevaeh and Carol both hit big shots, so good to see the ball go in for those two,” said Pritchett.

Freshmen Mar Molina Munoz (Parets del Valles, Spain) and Miah Wren (Rangely, Colo.) both tied for a team-high five assists. Sophomore Jacelyn Jorgensen (Paxton) had five bench points and five rebounds and sophomore Miriam Wahlqvist (Helsingborg, Sweden) had five points off the bench.

“And Mar and Miah made some great plays getting into the paint and creating for teammates,” said Pritchett.

Trinidad goes to was 0-14 and 2-25 overall

MCC finishes at 7-7 in the region and 15-15 overall.

MCC will be one of the four top teams in the final standings will have home-court advantage next weekend for the Region IX tournament opening round of games. Pairings and game times will be announced early next week.
