The McCook Community College golf team jumped over two teams Friday to finish in third place at the MCC Invitational at Heritage Hills Golf Course.
The Indians, who shot a 317 Thursday, started play Friday two shots back of Northeastern Junior College and seven back of Mesalands Community College (Tucumcari, N.M.) but posted a 297 to finish in third place. Eastern Wyoming won the title with a 14-under par two-day score of 562. Otero College was second with an eight-over 584. MCC finished with a 614.
“After a rough first day, I’m really proud and happy for everyone for showing that much resilience when faced with adversity,” said MCC Coach Grant Case. “Breaking 300 as a team Friday was awesome, it’s a goal that we have every week and accomplishing it here, at Heritage Hills, is extra sweet.”
MCC Sophomore Matt Grimonprez (Wasquehal, France) came back from a 76 on Thursday to shoot a five-under 67 Friday and finished in a fourth-place tie. He finished four shots out of the lead with a 143, which was one-under for the tournament.
“Matt once again continued to play well with Friday’s 67 (-5) being very impressive,” said Case.
Andrew Brown (sophomore, Wollongong, Australia) finished in a tie for ninth place. He shot back-to-back rounds of 74 and was a +4 for the tournament with a 148.
Sophomore Ross Donachie (Narin, Scotland) had a three-shot improvement Friday and finished with rounds of 80-77. Chance Gambini (sophomore, Las Vegas, Nevada) was seven strokes better on Friday and finished with rounds of 87 and 80 and freshman Cole Graham (McCook) had a 13-shot improvement Friday to finish with rounds of 92 and 79.
“Cole was able to turn it around and get back on track after a tough first round, and I’m especially happy for him,” said Case.
Eastern Wyoming’s Tytan Birchall claimed the individual shooting a 64 Friday and finishing with a two-day score of 139 – which was five-under par. That was one shot better than teammate Joshua Chapman and Otero’s Wesley Rodrigues.
Next up, the Indians will travel outside the region for the Bethel College Spring Invitational April 5-6 at Hesston/Newton, Kan.
