MCC golfers finish tied for fourth place at NJC

STERLING, Colo. – The McCook Community College golf team came from sixth place at the start of play Friday and finished in a tie with two other teams for fourth place in the Northeastern Junior College tournament.

Eastern Wyoming claimed the team title shooting a 16-under 556 to win by 21 shots over Central Wyoming and 31 over Otero Junior College.

MCC finished in a fourth-place tie with Lamar and Northeastern Junior College. MCC was in sixth place after the first round Thursday shooting a 301 but carded a 298 Friday.

“Round 2 in Sterling was similar to Round 1 and we came off the course with a little more confidence in our ability to score and knowing it could be so much better,” said MCC Coach Tyler Loop.

Freshman Matt Grimonprez (Villenuave-d’ascq, France) posted the low score for the two-day tournament shooting back-to-back rounds of 73 to finish at 146 – three over par and tied for 13thplace. Andrew Brown (freshman, Wollongong, Australia) had back to-back days of 75 to finish at 150 – seven over par.

Freshman Zachary Woods (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) was eight-over for the tournament with scores of 77 and 74. Ross Donachie (freshman, Narin, Scotland) was +11 with rounds of 78 and 76. Freshman Chance Gambini (Las Vegas, Nev.) had rounds of 76 and 79 to finish +12.

“The guys accomplished our goal of making strides in the right direction and I'm proud of them,” said Loop. “We look forward to next week in Torrington to continue our goal.”

The Region IX field will be in Torrington Wyo. for the Eastern Wyoming meet Thursday and Friday, April 11-12. On April 15-16 MCC will be in North Platte to compete in the Nebraska Junior College Showcase.

The District 1 Championship is set for April 25-26 at Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo, Colo.
