MCC golfers sixth at Eastern Wyoming

McCook Community College Golf

TORRINGTON, Wyo. – The McCook Community College golf team finished in sixth place at the two-day Eastern Wyoming tournament which concluded Friday.

“Another good week from the guys, but everyone left a lot of strokes out there,” said MCC Coach Grant Case.

Eastern Wyoming claimed its own invite by 30 shots shooting back-to-back rounds of 280 (eight-under par each day) to finish at 16-under – 30 shots better than Otero College and 35 shots better than a second Eastern Wyoming team.

“Thursday we could’ve been right around the 290-team score but stumbled across the finish line,” said Case. “With that being said, it’s still encouraging for us to be in that position in the first place.”

MCC had rounds of 305 and 302 to finish at +31 for the tournament.

“This time of the year, a few weeks before regionals, is when you typically want to see the best scores, and I think that’s where we’re at,” said Case.

Sophomores Matt Grimonprez (Wasquehal, France) and Andrew Brown (Wollongong, Australia) both shot 72s on Friday. Grimonprez finished in a tie for ninth plate with a +1 for his two days in Torrington. Brown tied for 13th and was +4 for the tournament.

“Matt continued his high level of play, being able to sustain it for this long of a stretch is super impressive and has been a big part of our team success,” said Case.

Sophomore Ross Donachie (Narin, Scotland) had rounds of 77 and 76 to finish at nine-over.

“I’m really proud of how Ross played Friday. He had a pretty rough start but was able to turn it around and finish with 76,” said Case.

Cole Graham (freshman, McCook) had rounds of 79 and 82 to finish at +17 and sophomore Chance Gambini (Las Vegas, Nevada) shot 80 and 86 to finish with a two-day 166.

The team will travel to Orange City, Iowa Wednesday for the Raider Men’s Invitational.

“Having a 36-hole tournament next week in Iowa will be a great experience for everyone right before we do it at the region tournament,” said Case.

The regular season concludes April 24-25 at Loveland, Colo. for the Region IX District Tournament.
