MCC golfers third at Otero meet

LA JUNTA, Colo. – The McCook Community golf team leapfrogged past Central Wyoming Friday to finish in third place at this week’s Region IX tournament hosted by Otero College.

MCC was in fourth place after Thursday’s first round to start the Region IX spring schedule, four shots back of Central Wyoming with a 307. On Friday the Indians were 15 strokes better than CWC and had a 17-shot improvement over Thursday to finish with a two-day 577.

“It was nice to get back out and playing within our region and seeing how we are stacking up against everyone,” said MCC Coach Grant Case. “On Thursday we played pretty tough with cold and windy conditions, but the guys did a good job of hanging in there as best as they could.”

Otero College topped the five-team field with an even-par score of 560 to win the tournament – 10 shots better than second-place Eastern Wyoming and 37 shots better than MCC.

MCC sophomore Matt Grimonprez (Wasquehal, France) shot a three-under par 67 Friday to finish in fourth place among individuals, with a two-day, two over 142. He shot a 75 Thursday. Andrew Brown (sophomore Wollongong, Australia) had rounds of 74 and 70 to finish in a tie for sixth place at 144.

Freshman Cole Graham (McCook) shot a 78 Thursday and a 76 Friday to finish with a two-day score of 154. Sophomore Chance Gambini (Las Vegas, Nevada) had rounds of 80 and 77 to finish with a 157.

“Matt continued his good play which was nice to see,” said Case. “As well as Cole and Andrew turning in some decent scores.”

Otero’s Pablo Alinquant was the individual medalist shooting a seven-under par 133.

MCC returns home to host the Region IX field March 27-28 at Heritage Hills Golf Course. Thursday play starts at 1 p.m. with Friday’s final round starting at 9 a.m.

“We’re looking forward to next week hosting our own event at Heritage Hills,” said Case.
