MCC Golfers win Nebraska JUCO Showcase

NORTH PLATTE – The McCook Community College golf team picked up its first tournament win today with an eight-shot win over North Platte in the one-day Nebraska Junior College showcase.

The tournament was held at River's Edge Golf Course and originally scheduled as a two-day event, but was pushed back two days because of adverse weather and reset as a one-day tournament.

MCC shot a 300 on the day to out-pace North Platte at 308 and Central Community College at 314.

“We were a little sloppy and not exactly sharp today but they got the job done for both the team and individually, both are the first this season,” said MCC Coach Tyler Loop.

Freshman Zachary Woods (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) took the individual team title with a 72.

Matt Grimonprez (freshman, Villenuave-d’ascq, France) shot a 75 and was tied for third place while freshman

Ross Donachie (Narin, Scotland) was sixth with a 76.

Andrew Brown (freshman, Wollongong, Australia) shot a 77 and Chance Gambini (freshman, Las Vegas, Nev.) shot an 84.

“This gains us a little more confidence going into our district tournament next week but we will have to clean up some of the sloppiness if we want a chance,” said Loop. “We'll celebrate this today though and start preparing for districts tomorrow.”

MCC has one tournament remaining with the significance of that tournament higher than in previous years.

This year the district tournament will determine qualifiers for the NJCAA National Tournament.

In previous years the Region IX teams competed in a year-long standings race with points awarded each tournament in the fall and spring. The team with the most points qualified for nationals and teams didn’t compete in a district tournament.

This year the NJCAA will consider Region IX and Region I (Arizona) their own district, and play their own tournament with the top two teams automatically qualifying for the national tournament.

The District 1 Championship is set for April 25-26 at the Walking Stick Golf Course at Pueblo, Colo. Teams competing from Region IX include: Eastern Wyoming, Central Wyoming, Otero, McCook, Northeastern Junior College and Lamar. Teams from District 1 include: Pima, Estrella Mountain and Eastern Arizona.
