No. 1 Huskers Sweep Top-15 Battle on the Road
No. 1 Nebraska recorded a 25-15, 25-19, 25-19 sweep of No. 15 Indiana in front of a sold-out crowd at Wilkinson Hall on Thursday night in Bloomington, Ind.
Nebraska (16-0, 5-0 Big Ten) extended its regular-season win streak to 47 after hitting .379 as a team and holding Indiana (10-4, 3-2 Big Ten) to a .282 hitting percentage.
The Huskers also improved their win streak in road and neutral-site matches to 23 matches, which is tied for 11th all-time in NCAA history and the longest nationally since 2011.
Harper Murray led Nebraska with 11 kills on .364 hitting and added seven digs and two blocks. Teraya Sigler tallied 10 kills on .389 hitting and chipped in five digs and a pair of blocks.
Andi Jackson hit .471 with nine kills, followed by Manaia Ogbechie with eight kills on .500 hitting and a team-best six blocks on the night.
Bergen Reilly recorded 35 assists, seven digs and three kills, while Olivia Mauch had a team-high 10 digs to go along with six assists and three service aces.
Nebraska had a 46-34 edge in kills, 36-20 advantage in digs and a 7-6 margin in blocks over the Hoosiers.
Set 1: Nebraska opened with a 25-15 win in the first set, scoring the first three points and jumping out to an 8-2 lead that forced an early Indiana timeout. Sigler led the Huskers with five kills in the set, including back-to-back kills to cap the opening run. Indiana closed to 8-4, but Nebraska answered and pushed the margin back out, with Reilly providing two straight kills on top of directing the offense to build the Big Red’s lead to 17-9. The Hoosiers strung together three straight points, two of them on blocks, to pull within 22-15. Nebraska then scored the final three points of the set, closing it out on a block assist by Virginia Adriano and Manaia Ogbechie.
Set 2: The Huskers took the second set 25-19 to grab a 2-0 lead in the match. Mauch served four straight points, including an ace, to push the Big Red to a 5-1 lead, and Laney Choboy added an ace to make it 7-2. Indiana answered with three straight points to pull within 12-9. Nebraska then rebuilt the lead to 20-14 behind back-to-back kills from Ogbechie and Sigler, prompting a Hoosier timeout. Murray’s kill gave Nebraska set point at 24-18, while her fifth kill of the set gave NU its 25-19 victory in the second frame.
Set 3: Nebraska completed the sweep with a 25-19 win in the third set. Indiana had an early 4-3 lead, but Murray served four straight Husker points, capped by an ace, to put Nebraska up 8-4 and force a Hoosier timeout. The Hoosiers answered with four consecutive points of its own to take a 12-10 advantage, before Mauch served back-to-back aces to put Nebraska ahead 14-13. From a 15-15 tie, the Huskers scored four straight points, three of them with Murray at the service line, to go up 19-15. Nebraska closed the set with three consecutive points, the last two on block assists by Ogbechie and Kenna Cogill, to clinch the road sweep.
Nebraska returns to action with a top-10 showdown against Wisconsin at John Cook Arena at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Saturday, Oct. 10. First serve between the top-ranked Huskers and No. 7 Badgers is set for 6 p.m. on FOX.
