No. 19 Northeastern JC sweeps MCC volleyball at home

No. 19 Northeastern Junior College handed the McCook Community College volleyball team a 3-0 loss Friday at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. NJC won 25-21, 25-18 and 25-20.
The Lady Indians came out in the first set on fire, scoring seven of the first nine points before the Plainswomen responded with a 7-2 run to tie the set at 9-9. After MCC took an 18-12 lead, NJC scored eight of the next nine points to take their first lead of the match at 20-19 and closed out the set on a 6-1 run.
The visitors from Sterling, Colo. continued their momentum on the second set with a 7-1 start before MCC responded with a 14-8 run to tighten the score to 12-15. After a time out, the Plainswomen stretched the lead and coasted to a 25-18 win.
MCC took an early 5-3 lead in the third set which featured eight tie scores and three lead changes. Tied 18-18, NJC closed out the sweep on a 7-2 run
Freshman Relebohile Phamotse (Maseru, Lesotho) once again led the MCC hitting attack with 10 kills (a .348 hitting percentage) along with six digs, and an assist block.
Sophomore Shana Muller (Gretz-Armainvilliers, France) compiled eight kills along with three digs, three assist blocks and one solo block.
Sophomore Bobbi Starkebaum (Haxtun, Colo.) had three kills on a .429 hitting night to go with five assist blocks. Jade Powell (freshman, Sterling, Colo.) had three kills, seven digs and one block assist.
Freshman Paula Urizar (Guatemala City, Guatemala) led MCC with nine digs while freshman Kamryn Slaugh (sophomore, Manila Utah) had seven digs.
Zoe Mulholland (sophomore, Lander, Wyo.) had 15 assists to pace the passing game and freshman Cheyanne Ortiz (Pueblo, Colo.) was credited with nine assists.
NJC improves to 6-0 in the Region IX South standings and 17-6 overall
MCC falls to 12-12 and 5-2 in the standings.
The Lady Indians will start their second lap around the Region IX South circuit with a pair of road games in the next week. On Wednesday the Tribe travels to Lamar. On Saturday, Oct. 10, MCC travels to Lincoln for a match against Southeast Community College.
