State Street Closures to Expand July 20
Grand Island, Neb. — The City of Grand Island Public Works Department is advising motorists of additional closures along State Street beginning Monday, July 20, as work continues on the State Street Roadway Improvement Project.
State Street will close between U.S. Highway 281 and Diers Avenue, and the intersection of State Street and Lawrence Lane/Overland Drive will also close at that time. State Street between U.S. Highway 281 and Lawrence Lane/Overland Drive is already closed and will remain closed through September 30. The portion west of U.S. Highway 281 is expected to be completed by November 20.
Diers Avenue will remain open to north and southbound traffic through the State Street intersection. Outside lanes on U.S. Highway 281 near State Street will also be closed to protect the work zones, and the State Street detour will follow North Road, Capital Avenue, Webb Road and 13th Street.
The project includes construction of a concrete curb-and-gutter roadway, sidewalks, traffic-control features, drainage improvements and other related work. This project is part of the City’s broader, multiyear plan to improve Claude Road, Diers Avenue and other nearby roadways and follows the completed extension of Claude Road from just north of Faidley Avenue to State Street, which was the first major component of the plan.
Future work is intended to create additional connections to Diers Avenue, manage access and improve traffic flow and safety along the corridor. Potential improvements near U.S. Highways 281 and 30 could include offset left-turn lanes and right-turn lanes for traffic exiting the highways. These Diers Avenue improvements are the second component to this project and timing of future projects will depend on available funding, development growth and community needs.
The Grand Island City Council awarded the State Street construction contract to Van Kirk Bros. Contracting of Sutton on May 11 with the contract totaling $2,888,826.44.
