Ticket Punched! Arapahoe Girls Basketball Advances To State
(Shelton, NE) - The Arapahoe girls basketball team punched its ticket to the state basketball tournament for just the sixth time in school history on Friday night, defeating Shelton, 67-55.
After going back and forth between the two teams for the first six minutes, the Warriors were able to make some distance in the final two minutes to take a 21-14 lead going into the second quarter. The Arapaohoe defense and full-court pressure were bothersome all night for the Bulldogs. Shelton would have 11 turnovers on the night.
Shelton would outscore Arapahoe 17-15 in the second quarter, giving the Warriors a 36-31 lead at the halftime break. At the seven-minute mark, Araphoe did have a ten-point lead.
The Warriors would have a 13-point lead with less than two minutes left in the third quarter. The second-half scoring would come mostly from sophomore Sawyer Shafer, who would end the game with 24 points, but all of the 24 would come in the second half. Araphoe would be up 10 at the end of the third quarter, 52-42. The Warriors would outscore Shelton in the final frame, 15-13.
Arapahoe on the night was superb from the free-throw line, going 23 of 28 on the night.
Shelton was led by Erin Gegg on the night with 14 points. The season ends for the Bulldogs with a record of 22-4.
To go with Sawyer Shafer's 24 points, Arapahoe would get 12 points from Suttyn Shafer and 13 points from Clara Hilker. The Warriors head to the state for the first time since 2014, with a record of 21-5.
