Accident On Hwy 83 Near Work Ethic Camp
McCook dispatch was contacted by numerous callers reference a car/Semi accident north of McCook on Hwy adjacent to the Work Ethic Camp. There was initially no report of injuries. Red Willow County Sheriff was contacted and responded to the location. Once on scene assistance with traffic control was requested of the McCook Police Department.
Contact with the driver of the vehicle wasn't sure if she was alright and McCook Ambulance was requested and responded. That driver was transported to McCook Community Hospital for continued assessment. The driver of the semi was uninjured.
Reports from both drivers' were supported by the skid marks and evidence at the scene. Additionally, the semi was equipped with video that bore out the explanations.
The vehicle a Ford Explorer was northbound on Hwy 83 just south of WEC when the driver noted a tire warning light, she pulled to the shoulder briefly. She decided that she probably shouldn't continue without getting it checked and began to make a U turn from the right shoulder. She was unaware of the approaching semi with the flatbed also northbound a short distance behind her.
The Semi seeing that the Ford had begun to turn across the Hwy, locked his brakes and swerved sharply left but was unable to avoid the collision. Impact occurred just into the southbound lane with front of the Ford striking the passenger side front of the Semi. The impact bent the bumper into the tire and broke the u bolts of the front axle shoving it rearward and into the body of the cab. The rear of the Ford then slammed the side of Semi and struck the fuel tank and trailer fender. That impact pushed the vehicle forward causing it to yaw or slid sideways, right then back into the side of the cab before coming to rest. Damage was extensive to both vehicles. Seat belts were in use.
The highway traffic was redirected for some time as the tow service formerly known as Sinner's was contacted to remove the damaged Semi.

I would include a reminder to the public. If you come upon a scene in which emergency vehicles with lights activated are on a scene, pay attention to the safety of everyone. What you are doing in that moment is not as important as the safety of those on scene trying to serve others. You don't need to rubberneck and unless specifically directed to drive through the scene, go around or wait. Thank You to those who do pay attention, you are appreciated.
